What is Healthy?

Being “Healthy” is a broad term that means different things to different people. Some people eat the Standard American Diet(known as the S.A.D. diet), and think they are eating healthy. Some people eat 90% meat and think they are eating healthy, and some people eat soy and think they are eating healthy. Meanwhile, everyone seems to want to force their idea of Healthy onto others with their own logic… and that’s what I will also do right now. 🙂

If you currently do not eat a healthy diet, it can be difficult to start such a plan. However, healthy eating is important for maintaining bodily function and living a disease-free life. If you struggle with healthy eating, then you know that breaking unhealthy habits can be the most difficult part of the process.

What I think Healthy Is

I think healthy is what is good for the body and what is in “Harmony” with the body. So when it comes to what is harmonious with the body and it’s functions I lean towards most vegetables, fruit, and some ancient grains like Quinoa, Amaranth and Spelt.

I have learned from a number of different teachers and they all seem to have these things in common. Some say that Grass fed chicken is okay to eat some times, some say lean Beef is okay to sometimes eat and some say that Certain Fish are okay to eat. But all of them agree that Vegetables and fruit are good for the body.

Good for the Body

I couple that information with the basic biology of the body, such as, the intestines being extremely long and winding and food having to travel that entire distance to be digested. According to the Mayo clinic(Mayo Clinic Article on food digestion times), Meat can take as long as 2 days to fully digest. By contrast, in the same article, they state that fruit and vegetables run more efficiently through your system… in less than 1 day. I’ve read where some fruit actually can digest in under 1 hour.

So when you understand the amount of time it takes meat to digest in your system along with the 3 meals per day that most people eat, it’s not hard to see how your body can get backed up quite easily. The long digestion time of meat and the almost constant intake of meat leaves your body in a state where it is constantly busy. If your body is constantly busy it has almost no time to repair and recharge itself. This is why in my opinion people are starting to get sick and break down by the age of 35 and 40 years old. The body is AMAZING and takes a lot of punishment over the years, but it definitely has a breaking point. I just think the body’s breaking point will be further in years if you assist your body with enriching foods instead of fighting and harming it with a S.A.D.(Standard American Diet) diet.

Conclusion

To me healthy, is what is healthy for my body and mind. Since both of them are going to be with me for the rest of my life, I think they should be my #1 priority. When you feel good, you’re not worried about being sleepy, or being in pain or getting tired walking up a flight of stairs. And I believe Feeling good, leads to Looking good, and then thinking good… or thinking healthy.  I will get more into the mental aspect of health in a future article.

Good Luck and Great Peace!!
